Ten years

I was cleaning off my computer yesterday and found one of my first pieces I tried to do digitally. It's a bad illustration of Disney's Tinkerbell. I can't remember why I drew this in the first place but my girlfriend now is a big fan of the character, so I thought I might update it a bit for her.

Wow, I think almost ten years makes a pretty good difference in my illustration skills. It's crazy to look back at old works and see how far you have come.

Day 12 - How I draw on the computer

To me drawing on the computer is hard. It takes a lot more planning then just puting pencil to paper. For me it's takes rounds and rounds to get something I like. Here is just two of these rounds to get my final line art.

Day 5 - I wish I could remember that guys name

About a month ago my friends and I went up to the Emerald City Comic Con and I bought a poster that one of the artists there drew. The poster was of the whole gang from Cowboy Bebop. It's really an amazing drawing. I would love to give the guy credit for the great peace of art he did, but I can't make out his signature. His drawing inspired this one. So thanks guy who's name I can't remember. I guess the moral of this post is sign your name so people can read it.
You may see this one colored in the next few weeks.

Day 3 - It's time

Here is a sketch I started a few months ago. I always have a stack of drawings just laying around, whether it's at home where they are scattered all over my desk or at work where I have a stack of about 30 or 40 sheets. Well, this morning when I was trying to think of something to draw to get myself warmed up for the day I saw my old doodles, just reached over and pulled from the bottom and here is the image that came out. I quickly inked it, adding a lot of the heavy dark shadows, scanned it and finally added a little color in PhotoShop.

Wow! I'm glad that stack finally came in handy.

Day 2 - The in-between time

The best time for me to do my quick sketching is all the in-between times at work. When a file is opening I lean over and draw a quick couple of lines. It's amazing what you can do with a minute here and a minute there. The printer is spooling a large InDesign file or maybe you're opening a 75mb PSD these are all good times to put the pencil to paper and get a quick idea out, but the trick is being able to stop. I don't know how I do it but I'm able to go from drawing mode back to design mode quickly so this works from me. This drawing took me all of 15 or 20 minutes every so often through out an eight hour day, so give it a shot and see what you come up with.

Day 1 - Hello

Lately, I have been reading a lot of blogs about illustration. After getting so many helpful tips and tricks from these sites I have decided to start my own. My main reason for not starting a blog earlier is that I'm not a great writer. That is why this blog is going to be based more on the drawings than the writing. Each image posted will have a small description but I wouldn't expect anything more in depth from me. It's all about the drawing here.

Something that everyone should know about me is that I am very inspired by what's going on around me. Lots of music, audiobooks, comics, movies and video games. Whatever has got my attention at the moment. You know all the stuff that people who work in a corporate environment don't get to draw. So you should be able to tell what I'm playing, watching, or listening to just by checking in. I guess what I'm trying to say is, this is going to be my outlet for whatever is going on in my head. Hopefully, this will inspire me to draw and post a sketch each day.

Day 1
Here is a quick 5 minute drawing Blue Prismacolor and black marker. 8.5x11. I don't know if anyone can tell what game I've been playing.
